The Five Products I Can’t Live Without

Hello, hello!  How was your weekend?  Mine was full of various errands and a little soccer (literally a little, because my team in a tournament at work lost our first two games in a double-elimination setup.  But I did “forget” to put sunscreen on my face, so I at least got some color).

Today, since I mostly review newer beauty/skincare/hair products on the blog, I thought it would be fun to share the ones I’ve used for years and keep returning to even as others come and go.  Also, I have spent a lot of time hunched over my monitor at work like a gremlin as of late, and nothing particularly unique came to mind for this post.

Tips for Wearing Red Lipstick

So, you guys.  I have a confession.  Actually, two confessions.

The first is that on Tuesday night I slept from 8:15 pm to 7:15 a.m. and then on Wednesday I ate a box of macaroni and cheese and a giant bowl of ice cream AFTER I had already stopped at Panera for dinner on the way home, so I couldn’t finish more than two posts this week.  I just had to lay down.  Three straight weekends out of town have taken their toll, or at least that’s the excuse I’m claiming.

The other confession is that I didn’t teach myself how to wear lipstick until like a month ago.  My office is as casual as it gets, and so is the Columbus bar scene (not that I really get out), so I never had a reason to take the plunge.  However, I had a wedding to attend a few weeks ago and really wanted to do a red lip for some reason, so I scoured the web for instructions while at work and did some practice at home.  Here are five tips that will help you get started, too…

Drugstore Makeup Favorites Part 2

Hi!  I hope you’re having a fabulous Tuesday.  We’ve been enjoying lots of humidity here, so my hair has looked great.

Today’s post is the second in a series on my favorite budget beauty picks (click the link to read part 1).  I meant to finish this installment, which focuses on eye makeup, a little bit sooner, but I ended up testing a few losers and also forgetting what products I had already planned to include.  I took out my makeup bag to take photos on Sunday and found five things I’d recently bought but had yet to try.  Probably losing it.  Here we go…drugstore eye makeup 1

Drugstore Makeup Favorites Part 1

I know it’s the end of the week when I stare at the floor for twenty minutes trying to gather my thoughts and start a post.  Are you doing anything fun this weekend?  I’m (obviously) looking forward to catching up on sleep.  I try not to have caffeine after lunch unless I really need it, but I bought a can of Diet Mountain Dew and some Easter jelly beans in the cafe every afternoon this week.  That’s my personal recipe for feeling great.

Moving on…I’ve had some inexpensive beauty products from Target in my makeup arsenal for a while and recently tried a bunch more.  I ended up gathering too many to share in one post, so this will be the first in a little series.  Below I’ll cover my favorites for face and lips, and you can watch for haircare, skincare, and eye makeup posts later this month.

My Morning Routine: Makeup You Can Do in the Car

resolved this New Year to get out of bed when my alarm went off in order to mentally prepare for the day and maybe even eat an egg for breakfast instead of grabbing a protein bar to go.  This has not become a habit: some days I manage to finish getting ready before starting my commute, others I don’t.  So today, I bring you: my makeup routine for when I do my makeup in the car.

Three New Skincare Products

If I’ve learned anything in my almost three years in the workforce, it’s that even if you don’t think you enjoy online shopping, you can learn to like it by spending many of your waking hours sitting in front of a computer.  Choosing an afternoon snack from the rainbow of Girl Scout cookie boxes that pop up in the office at this time of year and opening a package can be a great afternoon pick-me-up, especially if you don’t remember what you ordered.

new skincare products

I’ve read about several new skincare products and ingredients lately, so I made them the focus of my last online shopping trip.  I tried a rosewater hydrating spray, a coffee-based lip scrub and balm, and a face wash made with baking soda.  Here’s what I thought… Continue reading

Searching for a Smudgeproof Eyeliner

I haven’t worn eyeliner on my waterline, or lower inner rim of my eye, lately because I just can’t find one that stays put.  But since we know it’s important to persevere through difficult times, I picked up three new eyeliners to test last week at Ulta.  Here’s what I thought of them (Uncle John, aren’t you glad you decided to subscribe to this blog via email?):

eyeliners

Front to back: Mally, Urban Decay, and Loreal eyeliners

Mally Beauty Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Eyeliner in Midnight, $18
This was a nicely pigmented classic black that was easy to apply – I didn’t have any trouble drawing a smooth, thin line above my upper lashes, where it stayed all day. However, only about half the product was left on my waterline at lunch, and it had completely disappeared by the time I got home at 9 pm.

Urban Decay Cosmetics 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Hustle, $20
I liked this eyeliner the most out of the three. The slightly metallic brown is perfect for everyday wear for all skin tones, although I might choose a deeper brown or black for nighttime. It didn’t last any longer than the Mally eyeliner on my waterline, but it was even creamier and easier to apply. According to the packaging, one of these guys is sold every 13 seconds, which actually could be true based on the number of positive reviews I read.  Urban Decay also makes a special waterliner pencil I might purchase in the future.

Loreal Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner in Plum, $8.99
I loved the deep purplish-black color of this eyeliner but probably won’t buy it again because it didn’t go on smoothly.  In general, I think higher-quality eyeliners are worth the investment.  This product did at least smudge easily so I could blend and soften it rather than having to start over on my upper lashline.

Finally, I read a tip as I prepared this post that I’ll have to try: using powder eyeshadow to set eyeliner on your waterline.  You use an eyeshadow brush to dust some on right after applying eyeliner.  Hopefully it works!

Have a great weekend.
